‘time’を使って丁寧にお願いしてみよう！

Every Day English　- Do you have… time?

Time is a very useful word. It is often paired with the question starter ‘Do you have…’, and its meaning can change depending on what follows.

You can ask someone ‘do you have time?’ to simply ask if they are busy or not. This can be expanded into a request by using the preposition ‘to’.

Examples
Do you have time to help me with this report?
Do you have time to get milk on your way home?

It’s a polite way to ask someone for help. Another helpful question to remember is ‘Do you have the time?’ which you can use to ask someone what the time is.

‘Time’ はとても便利な単語です。質問の頭に来る‘Do you have…’,とセットになることが多く、それに続く言葉によって意味が変わります。

誰かに、忙しいかどうかだけ尋ねたい時は、‘do you have time?’＝「時間がありますか？」と言ええば良いです。しかし前置詞の’to’を使うことによって役割を拡げ、何かを頼む時に使える文にできるのです。

例）
Do you have time to help me with this report?＝このレポートを手伝ってくれる時間はありますか？（時間があれば、レポートを手伝ってくれませんか？）
Do you have time to get milk on your way home?＝家に帰る途中で牛乳を買う時間はありますか？（時間があれば、家に帰る途中で牛乳を買ってくれませんか？）

誰かにお願いをする時に、丁寧に頼む言い方です。

覚えておくと便利な別の表現は、‘Do you have the time?’です。誰かに時間を尋ねる時に使えますよ。
