Hi, today I’m not particularly going to give you any English advice but more like a bit of advice on a cultural difference between the U.K and Japan.

Tipping. I know tipping isn’t big in Japan and it worries a lot of people before they go abroad, but it’s pretty simple really. In the U.K the service fees generally aren’t included in prices so it’s pretty common to leave tips in restaurants, give tips to hotel staff, and tip taxi drivers.

Tips generally range from about ten percent to 15 percent of the price of something but if you don’ t know how much to give a few pounds is probably okay.

If you are paying for a taxi or a meal at a restaurant you can simply say.

“ Keep the change please.”

There’s no real reason to tip in every situation in the U.K though unless you thought that the service was worth it. I have cooked dinner for the Rockefeller family and Paris Hilton neither of which left me anything!

Warning!

British taxi drivers DO expect tips though so please be careful.

今日は特別な英語のアドバイスはありませんが、イギリスと日本の文化的な違いについてお伝えしようと思います。

チップについて。日本ではチップは大きな習慣ではないので、海外に行くときに多くの人がチップについて心配していますが、実はとってもシンプルです。
イギリスでは一般的に、サービス料は含まれていませんので、レストランや、ホテルのスタッフやタクシー運転手にチップを置いて行くのはごく普通のことです。

チップは一般的に10~15%が適当ですが、いくらあげれば良いかわからないときは
２、３ポンドでも恐らく大丈夫です。

もし、タクシーやレストランでチップを払う時は、簡単にこう言いましょう。

“ お釣りは取っておいてください。”

UKでは、そのサービスに価値があると感じない限りは、どんなシチュエーションでもチップをあげないといけないという理由はありません。

ロックフェラー家族やパリスヒルトンにディナーをつくったことがありますが、
彼らは何も置いていかなかったです！
