Everyday English-イギリスのスラング “quite”

Hi everybody, hope you are all surviving this extremely humid weather, can’t wait for the end of the rainy season!

Today I will teach you how we use the word “quite” in Britain.
You are probably used to hearing it used to describe things as being “okay” or “fairly” but in the U.K we also use it to mean “very” or “absolutely”.

For example…

“The food at the restaurant we went to was quite dreadful! I shall never set foot in there again.”

In this sentence the speaker is telling us that the food was really bad.

You can also use it to just agree with someone when think that they are right.

“John and Mary are getting a divorce! I knew that marriage would never last.”

“Quite”

In this conversation the speaker is showing their total agreement.

We often add “right” to to the word too .

“I’ve done all my work for the day, I’m calling it a day and going home”

“Quite right! You deserve a rest.”

Hi everybody! 皆さんがこのべたべたした気候に負けてないといいのですが・・・。梅雨が終わるのが待ち遠しいです！

今回は“quite”の使い方をお教えいたします。
“quite”は"オッケー"や"まあまあ"という意味にとらえがちですが、イギリスでは"非常に"や"絶対に"という意味で使用します。

例えば、、、
“The food at the restaurant we went to was quite dreadful! I shall never set foot in there again.”
"ここのレストランの料理はすごくひどかった！もう二度と行かないよ。"

ここでは話し手が私たちに料理がとってもまずかった事を話しています。

誰かに同意するときも使えます。
“John and Mary are getting a divorce! I knew that marriage would never last.”
"ジョンとメリーが離婚したんだって！長く続くと思わなかったよ。"
“Quite”
"全くその通り"

たまに“right” と一緒に使うこともあります。
“I’ve done all my work for the day, I’m calling it a day and going home”
"全ての仕事をやり切った！今日は切り上げて帰ろう"
“Quite right! You deserve a rest.”
"まったくその通り！休みが必要だよ"
