Edward Jenner and Vaccinations

There is a lot of talk about vaccines, all over the world right now. Each time I hear about it I’m reminded of perhaps one of the most important men in History, Edward Jenner. He was born and lived in England, and during his time, there was a terrible disease called ‘smallpox’ that killed around 10-20% of the population.

Smallpox is one of the most dangerous diseases in History, it is responsible for hundreds of millions of deaths worldwide. Incredibly, only 40 years ago the numbers were still as high as 2 million people a year. Luckily for us that live now, it was eradicated by a vaccine in 1979.

That vaccine was made based on the work 200 years ago by people like Edward Jenner. He in particular discovered that people who had cowpox (a similar, but far less dangerous disease) were actually immune to smallpox, this gave him the idea of actually infecting people with cowpox, to protect them from smallpox. And it worked!

Scientists have refined practices like that over many years, now we have extremely safe vaccines that protect us from a number of dangerous diseases.

現在、世界中でワクチンについてたくさん話されています。私はそれを聞くたびに、おそらく歴史上でもとても重要な一人の男性、エドワード・ジェンナーの事を思い出します。

彼は、とても恐ろしい病気である天然痘が人口の10-20%もの人々の命を奪っていた頃、イングランドで生まれ育ちました。
天然痘は歴史上で最も危険な病気のひとつです。これによって世界中で何百万人もの人々が亡くなりました。信じられない事に、その数はたった40年前まで依然、2百万人と高いものでした。幸運なことに、1979年にワクチンによって根絶したため、私たちは現在生きています。

このワクチンは200年前のエドワード・ジェンナー達による研究をベースとして作られました。彼は牛痘（天然痘に似ているがそれよりも危険性が低い病気）にかかった人々が、天然痘の免疫を持っていることを発見しました。これにより彼は　人々を天然痘から守るため、牛痘に感染させるという考えを思いつき、実際に成功させました！

科学は何年にも渡る実験で精度を高め、現在ではとても安全なワクチンが数多くの危険な病気から私たちを守ってくれています。
