New Year celebrations in Edinburgh
As many of you know, my hometown is Edinburgh - and it’s really famous for its New Year celebrations. We actually call new year “Hogmanay” in Scotland. On December 31st, there is a big street party in the main street in the city. The roads are closed and the street is just filled with people. There are bands playing loud music on the stages and it’s so packed it’s hard to move. Of course, it’s very cold in Scotland at the end of the year. Everyone is usually freezing, and wearing a really big winter jacket, hat, scarf and gloves! However, this doesn’t stop people from celebrating. At midnight we have a big countdown from 10 to 1 - everyone joins in! On the stroke of midnight, we can enjoy one of the biggest fireworks displays in the world from Edinburgh Castle. Then everyone hugs and kisses each other - friends, family and strangers too - and shouts “HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!” After the fireworks, everyone heads inside to the pub. We sing Auld Lang Syne and raise a glass to welcome the new year.
If you ever have the chance to visit Scotland, and can bear the cold weather, I definitely recommend going there for New Year - it’s a party like no other!

エディンバラでの年越し
多くの方がご存知の通り、私の出身地はエディンバラです。そしてエディンバラは新年のお祝いがとても有名です。実は、スコットランドでは、新年のことを「Hogmanay」と呼んでいます。
12月31日には、街のメイン通りでは大きなストリートパーティーが開催されます。道路では車は通行止めになり、人々で溢れます。ステージではバンドが大きな音で演奏し、ぎゅうぎゅうに混雑して動けないほどです。もちろん、年末のスコットランドはとても寒いです。人々は皆寒さで凍えていて、とて大きな冬用のジャケットを着て、帽子、マフラー、手袋をしています。でも、そんな凍えるほどの寒さですら、人々が新年を祝うのを止めることはできません。深夜には、皆が参加して、10秒前からカウントダウンします！時計の針がちょうど深夜0時を告げると、世界でも最大規模の大きさであるエディンバラ城からの花火を楽しめるのです。
それから人々は友達や家族、見知らぬ人ともハグやキスをして「ハッピーニューイヤー!!!」と叫びます。
花火が終わると人々はパブへ向かいます。私達はAuld Lang Syne(蛍の光)を歌い、グラスを掲げて新年を迎えます。
もしあなたがスコットランドを訪れる機会があって、寒い気候に耐えられるなら、新年に行ってみることを強くお勧めします、その他のパーティーとは全く違うものですよ！
